As smartphones have become an indispensable part of daily life, authentic face-to-face communication among young people has begun to dwindle. With everyone preoccupied by their screens, the physical world has transformed into a silent space where real conversations are rare and human nuances are lost.

Recent studies indicate that youth spend over six hours a day on smartphones, mostly browsing social media. Although the primary goal of these apps is to enhance connection, the reality on the ground seems to be quite the opposite.

Dr. Hala Abdel Aziz, Professor of Sociology at Cairo University, notes that "human relationships have become superficial and hurried, as young people prefer sending a WhatsApp message over a direct meeting." She adds, "This shift in communication patterns has a negative psychological impact; many youths feel isolated despite having hundreds of online friends."

On the other hand, some young people argue that smartphones have facilitated communication with friends living far away. Mohamed Sami, a university student, says: "I talk to my friends in Saudi Arabia and Germany every day, which wouldn`t have been possible without the internet." However, Mohamed admits that despite this, he feels bored during in-person gatherings, noticing that everyone is constantly distracted by their phones.

Psychologist Ahmed Tawfik emphasizes that excessive phone use leads to what is known as "Digital Isolation," where an individual is physically present but mentally absent. He recommends designating specific times for phone use and encouraging real-life interactions within the family and at the university.

Smartphones are an indispensable tool in the modern era, yet they are a double-edged sword. The responsibility lies in using them mindfully, ensuring they do not obscure our humanity or our genuine connection with those around us.
