The Department of Journalism and Digital Media at the Faculty of Mass Communication, Cairo University, organized a comprehensive orientation session for Level 2 students. The session aimed to highlight the "Journalism and Online Publishing" program in English and discuss how to prepare a new generation of journalists capable of merging traditional journalism with the digital world. The event was held under the auspices of Prof. Dr. Wissam Nasr, Dean of the Faculty, and under the general supervision of Prof. Dr. Amal El-Sayed Deraz, Head of the Journalism and Digital Media Department.
The session covered three main pillars that drew a comprehensive roadmap for the students` academic and professional future:
First: The Academic Roadmap (What will students study?) The session reviewed the program`s curriculum, which focuses in its advanced levels (Levels 3 and 4) on building a solid foundation that combines:
Journalistic Writing and Reporting: Mastering news gathering and objective writing.
Specialized Technical Skills: Such as photojournalism, visual storytelling, editorial design, and journalistic translation.
Digital Journalism: Studying online publishing and social media journalism.
Video Journalism: Training in the production and editing of visual news reports.
Graduation Project: The final stage where students present a comprehensive journalistic work to prove their professional competence.
Second: Acquired Skills (Traits of the Comprehensive Journalist) The second part of the session focused on transforming the student into a "Multi-Platform Storyteller." Graduates acquire qualitative skills including:
.
The ability to conduct professional interviews and fact-check information.
Mastery of video production and "Reels" tailored for modern audiences.
Data analysis and converting complex information into interactive graphics (Data Visualization).
Digital content management and Search Engine Optimization (SEO) for social media platforms to ensure engagement and reach.
Third: Modern Career Opportunities (Beyond the Newsroom) In the third pillar, the session debunked the traditional idea that a graduate`s work is limited to print newspapers, showcasing a vast market of opportunities including:
Digital Media: As podcast producers, digital content creators, and online platform managers.
Strategic Communication: In the fields of public relations, marketing, and advertising.
Future Jobs (Journalism 2.0): Roles that rely on Artificial Intelligence, such as Prompt Engineers, audience engagement analysts, and specialists in AI ethics and governance.
The event witnessed remarkable interaction and participation from students who showed great interest in learning about the department and its programs. The session was moderated by Dr. Norhan Hesham and Dr. Sara El-Meshmeshy, Lecturers at the department.
