The launch of “COP27” climate conference, in presence of more than 100 leaders

    The activities of the “COP27” climate conference began, Sunday,6NOV, with the “procedural opening” session, which witnessed the handover of the presidency of the conference from Britain to Egypt, in the presence of SamehShoukry, Minister of Foreign Affairs, appointed president of the 27th session of the conference, and Alok Sharma, president of the 26th session held in Glasgow. .

    During that session, Sharma delivered the opening speech to Minister SamehShoukry, in his capacity as the designated president of “COP 27”, during which he focused on the importance of Egypt’s presidency of the African conference, in addition to his stress on the need to confront climate change. The countries of the world are united in order to preserve the lives of different generations in the future.

    SamehShoukry gave a speech about Egypt`s hosting of the climate conference, and the Egyptian presidency`s goals from it, foremost of which is moving pledges in various climate fields to the implementation stage, and working together to combat climate changes, reduce harmful emissions, and achieve what is known as "carbon neutrality", in addition to Achieving a just transition to the use of clean energy, and doubling financing for climate issues.

    Shoukry’s speech was followed by a statement by Simon Steele, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change who concentrated on 3 critical lines:Showing transformation for implementation by putting negotiations into tangible actions, Establishing progress in crucial work lines, including mitigation, adaptation and importantly loss and damage, Reinforcing the application of transparency and accountability.
    Then there was a statement by Hosung Lee, President of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, on the importance of holding the COP 27 climate conference in Sharm El-Sheikh, in addition to the necessity of Achieving climate change goals.

    The second phase of the climate conference is scheduled to start today, Monday, with the “Presidents’ Summit”, which is the actual opening of the work of the international event, during which President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi will receive heads of countries and governments around the world to participate in the “Sharm El-Sheikh Climate Summit for Implementation”, and it will continue until Tuesday.

    The "Presidents` Summit" will witness world leaders giving speeches on the climate issue, holding a number of bilateral meetings between them, in addition to holding 6 high-level round tables, and other important events, over the two days.

    Teaching new generations sustainability, adaptability and resilience:
    The Egyptian Presidency of the Climate Conference is scheduled to launch 11 initiatives during the conference activities, including: Sustainable Urban Resilience for the Next Generation (SURGE), Climate Action and Nutrition (I-CAN), Action on Water, Adaptation and Resilience (AWARE), and Food and Agriculture for Transformation. Sustainable, “Global Waste 50”, Equitable and Affordable Energy Transition in Africa, Lives Dignity for Climate Resilient Africa, Climate Responses to Sustaining Peace (CRSP), African Women and Climate Adaptation Priorities (CAP), Friends of Greening Investment Plans national, and promoting nature-based solutions for climate transformation (ENACT).

    Several key discussions will also take place over the course of days, including opportunities for collective pledges, discussions, round tables and side events, which the Egyptian presidency of “COP 27” has identified as part of efforts to advance climate action, which can address bottlenecks and gaps in implementation, and deepen participation. With youth, women, civil society and indigenous peoples at the center of the discussions.
    Key areas of discussion during the Climate Conference include the areas of the pledge for innovation and clean technologies, as well as the centrality of water and agriculture in the climate crisis, biodiversity loss, energy transition, decarbonization efforts and financing.

    Earlier, the Egyptian Presidency of the Climate Conference stressed that “COP 27” aims to promote inclusive dialogue and participation among climate actors through events, exhibitions, workshops, cultural performances and talks.

    On the organizational side, the Sharm El-Sheikh International Conference Center will represent the comprehensive “blue zone” of the conference, where all negotiations between world leaders and delegates on climate issues are scheduled to take place, in addition to organizing many events by governments and accredited observers, including young people and scientists.

    The “Green Zone” covers an area of 22,500 square meters, and includes representatives of the business community, youth, civil society, academia and artists from all over the world, as well as additional space for attendance and participation.

    About 100 leaders and prime ministers around the world announced their participation in the climate conference, most notably: US President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Schultz, Brazilian President Lula da Silva, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, and Georgia Meloni, Prime Minister of Italy Mark Rutte, Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Pedro Sanchez, Prime Minister of Spain, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Union Commission, and Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations.
