Warner Bros. Discovery says the company is open to creating more Harry Potter projects from J.K. Rowling. Originally written as a series of seven books by Rowling, the Harry Potter franchise has skyrocketed into one of the highest-grossing media franchises of all time over the past several decades. The book series spawned eight films, a spinoff film series, a two-part play, and more. The most recent addition to the Harry Potter franchise was the movie Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, which premiered in April 2022.
While the seven Harry Potter novels and eight adapted films were a massive global success, all has not been well in the Wizarding World. The spinoff film series Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which starred Eddie Redmayne and Jude Law, has a history of poor performance and critical reception. To date, The Secrets of Dumbledore box office holds the title of the lowest opening of any Harry Potter film, garnering $42.2 million domestically over its first weekend. While this was still enough to debut at #1, the other two movies in its series opened to $74.4 million and $62.1 million in the US, and all three are below the openings of every main Harry Potter entry. The most prominent trouble with the Harry Potter franchise, however, is the controversy surrounding its author. Rowling has been very vocal about views decried as transphobic, and has openly supported and donated to causes that harm the transgender community. Many longtime Harry Potter fans have abandoned the franchise due to the ongoing controversy, and even franchise star Daniel Radcliffe has spoken out against Rowling`s comments

Despite Rowling`s controversy and Fantastic Beasts` poor performance, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav says there is potential do to more Harry Potter projects with the author`s involvement. At the company`s earnings meeting (via Variety), Zaslav mentions his interest in doing "something with J.K. on Harry Potter going forward," citing how much profit the Harry Potter franchise has generated for Warner Bros. over the past 25 years. We’re going to have a real focus on franchises. We haven’t had a ‘Superman’ movie in 13 years. We haven’t done a ‘Harry Potter’ movie in 15 years. The DC movies and the ‘Harry Potter’ movies provided a lot of the profits of Warner Bros. Motion Pictures over the last 25 years. So a focus on the franchise — one of the big advantages that we have, ‘House of the Dragon’ is an example of that, ‘Game of Thrones,’ taking advantage of ‘Sex and the City,’ ‘Lord of the Rings,’ we still have the right to do ‘Lord of the Rings’ movies.
