Cairo University President Prof. Dr. Mohamed Othman Elkhosht announced that the university has advanced in the English QS Sustainability ranking for 2022, a classification that ranks 700 of the world’s most prestigious universities in the field of sustainability, including only three Egyptian universities, and Cairo University ranked from 201-220, leading Other Egyptian universities are included in this new classification, which is concerned with determining the impact of universities on society and the academic field in environmental and social aspects.

Dr. Elkhosht explained that Cairo University came at the forefront of the ranking of Egyptian universities in the QS Sustainability classification for 2022, as it ranked 239 in the field of environmental impact and ranked 295 in the field of social impact, stressing that the university participates in a major role in global efforts to bring about environmental and social change, whether Through research, teaching, or community engagement, and improving sustainability. .

Dr. El-Khosht added that among the strategic objectives of Cairo University in its transformation into a fourth-generation university is to focus on the ecosystem and encourage scientific research in the field of sustainability and environmental preservation and confronting and limiting climate changes, consolidating the university’s role in many development axes, The integration of the university’s educational and research plan with Egypt’s strategic vision 2030 and the sustainable development goals of the United Nations, and within the framework of the university’s contribution to the climate change file through many procedures concerned with topics that serve the issues of climate and environmental changes. .

The President of Cairo University indicated that the university will establish a sustainability office in 2021, with the aim of enhancing institutional sustainability and preparing cadres capable of finding environmentally sound, socially just and economically viable solutions to make Cairo University a world leader in promoting environmental sustainability, pointing out that the university organized a simulation model for its students. At the Conference of the States Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in cooperation with the United States Agency for International Development, and signed a cooperation protocol with the Ministry of Environment to establish the first university programs for environmental sciences in Africa and the Middle East in cooperation with the World Bank.

The President of Cairo University indicated that the inclusion of universities in this new classification of QS Sustainability depends on their total scores in two categories. The first category includes environmental impact and includes 3 indicators: the sustainability of educational institutions, the sustainability of education, and the sustainability of scientific research. The second category includes social impact and includes 5 Indicators are equality, knowledge sharing, education impact, employment and opportunity, and quality of life. .
