Jeffery Dahmer: Reality vs. Netflix

 (362)

Dahmer, Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story is an American biographical crime limited series created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan for Netflix. It aired on September 21 for one season. Murphy also serves as a showrunner and an executive producer along with Brennan. The series is about the life of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer (Evan Peters). Other main characters include Dahmer`s father Lionel (Richard Jenkins), stepmother Shari (Molly Ringwald), suspicious neighbor Glenda (Niecy Nash), and Grandmother Catherine (Michael Learned).

The series explores the motives of Jeffrey Dahmer and how he became one of the most notorious serial killers in America. His victims, consisting of men and boys, were murdered in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Ohio between 1978 and 1991.

Netflix`s Dahmer has been watched a lot, making it Netflix`s second most popular English-language series, according to watch-time stats, showing the growing popularity of the serial-killer series. The show, which goes by the full title Dahmer: Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, has been watched worldwide for a total of 701.4 million hours from its release date on Sept. 21.

Although the story of Jeffery Dahmer was there for a long time, some people would hear his name somewhere and not know who this person was until Netflix produced the series telling the story from the beginning and making it go viral. Social media platforms are flooded with a lot of things related to Dahmer. The story is all over the globe, and people now know who Dahmer is.

Netflix made it so realistic that it entered and affected the hearts of millions of people. They now immortalise the memory of his victims, and that is the positive side.

A show like "Dahmer" should expect controversies to arise. Online, especially on TikTok, there were many who were quick to call out the show for several reasons. There were a few issues that stuck out. First, the families of the victims were not notified or reached out to by Netflix before the show. One of Dahmer’s victims, Errol Lindsey’s sister, Rita Isbell, made a comment about receiving no contact from the show. She states that the show is only profiting off of the victims, sadly making the families live through that traumatic event in their lives again.

Some reports also quoted Anne E. Schwartz, the reporter who broke the Dahmer story in the Milwaukee Journal in 1991. He told the UK-based Independent that the Netflix series wasn`t accurate in some ways. Schwartz, who later worked for the Milwaukee Police Department and the Wisconsin Department of Justice, said "the depiction of city police officers as racist and homophobic was incorrect."

Also, the series features Niecy Nash as Dahmer`s neighbor, Glenda Cleveland. She`s shown as living right next door to the killer and staring him down in the hall, as well as reporting the smells and sounds of the murders to the police. Schwartz pointed out that Cleveland, who died in 2011, actually lived in a separate building from Dahmer. But it was Cleveland who tried to talk the police out of returning a 14-year-old victim, Konerak Sinthasomphone, to Dahmer, who went on to murder the boy.

Jeffrey Dahmer, who struck fear in the hearts of so many people, was born in 1960. He was accused of raping and killing 17 men and boys and eating their organs from 1978 to 1991. After his capture, he was sentenced to fifteen terms of life imprisonment on February 17, 1992. In prison, in what some would call karma, he was killed at the hand of Christopher Scarver, who beat him to death.

Thinking back in time about what turned Dahmer into this monster, several answers were given. Some say it’s because of his parents. Jeffrey`s dad taught him how to anatomize dead animals, and as he grew, he did this to human beings. His mother, an addict who left him alone and took his brother only when she and his dad divorced, might also be to blame. Others also argue that Jeffrey Dahmer was just a psychopath from the beginning. Watching that show, it is hard to tell what is real and what is an act; it is very reality-like that it is almost impossible to differentiate between them anymore.
