Cairo University President, Dr. Mohamed Othman Elkhosht, received a report from Dr. Mohamed Sami Abdel Sadiq, Vice President of the University for Community Service and Environmental Development, on the university`s progress in the international classification of environmentally friendly green universities "UI Green Metric" in the field of sustainable development for the year 2022-2023, and its arrival The first place among Egyptian public universities, the second place in Africa after the American University, and the 270th place globally among 1050 universities worldwide.
The report stated that the classification of the global green scale for universities, organized by the universities of Indonesia, is one of the most important international classifications concerned with environmentally friendly green universities, and is based on basic criteria, including location, infrastructure, green spaces, education and scientific research, energy, water and waste management, and transportation.
The report indicated that Cairo University `s strategy in its transformation into fourth-generation universities focuses on the environmental system, encouraging scientific research in the field of sustainability and environmental preservation, confronting and limiting the effects of climate change, consolidating the university`s role in many development axes, and integrating the university`s educational and research plan with the vision of Egypt`s Strategy 2030 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
The report indicated that the university established in 2021 a sustainability office, the first of its kind in Egyptian universities, with the aim of instilling a culture of sustainability in the university, and taking steps towards a more sustainable life, learning and work environment for the university community, in addition to promoting institutional sustainability and working to prepare cadres capable of finding environmentally sound solutions. socially just and economically feasible, to make Cairo University a world-leading institution in promoting environmental sustainability.
The report emphasized that the university contributed to reducing its negative environmental impacts, providing a comprehensive view of the culture of sustainability on campus, and the university`s commitment to the environmental, social and economic aspects of sustainability.
