Dr. Ayman Ashour, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, praised the team of the National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG) who won first place in an international competition on forecasting earthquakes around the world (AETA 2022), which was organized by the State of China, with the participation of 100 teams from different countries of the world.
NRIAG, with a team headed by Dr. Omar Mohamed Al-Saeed, a researcher at the institute, represented Egypt and the institute in that competition, in which many scientists and researchers from the universities of (Texas and Austin), the seismic network of Texas, USA, and Qiang University from China participated.
This competition aims to predict the occurrence of earthquakes with a magnitude of more than 3.5 within a week of the start date, and artificial intelligence algorithms were used to predict the occurrence of an earthquake or not and predict the location and strength of the earthquake, and the target area for the competition was Sichuan and Yunnan provinces in China, and the competition lasted for nearly six months; To determine the quality and accuracy of the different algorithms for each team.
