Interview By: Ezz Wasef
This is an interview done with the previous president of Emmkan Ambassadorship Aly Makram, to further know what the organization’s work is and enlighten people with it.
Can you introduce yourself?
My name is Aly Makram. I’m a student at the Faculty of Mass Communication in Cairo University. I’m 19 years old. I started joining different student extracurricular activities in high school, I learned a lot through my journey between various roles and functions.
What was your role as the president of Emmkan ambassadorship?
My role was to set the yearly agenda of the program then make sure the program was following it. As the program consists of four different teams with four different team leaders, my responsibility was to make sure the team leaders were completing their role in the yearly agenda in complete harmony while pushing the program forward towards our goal.
What is Emmkan?
Emmkan is an educational organization that gives great value towards tackling mental health issues, developing psychological attitude, improving character and behavior, as well as the core skill set that is required to succeed in the workplace.
While the ambassadorship program is a student-run program that gives the youth the chance to practice their leadership, communication, and teamwork skills, as well as become active citizens.
How did this role impact you personally and professionally?
Personally, this role helped me develop my skills in general whether leadership skills or communication skills or other skills that came along the way. As well as it boosted my self-esteem as I was very hesitant to apply for it. But after I got the role and started working with my team leaders, setting goals for the program, and fixing issues that faced us before, I realized how qualified I was for the role and I was proud of the impact I made on the younger members in the program.
Professionally, this role was the reason I applied for higher positions later that year and opened the gate for lots of opportunities for me that really helped my career to take off as I landed my first paid internship later that summer.
.
What would you tell someone who wants to start joining student activities?
I highly recommend joining student activities. They should try to get the most out of this experience, put in the effort, be willing to learn, and adapt to different communities. These skills and this attitude is what genuinely helps them in their career later whether on a technical, professional and a social level.
