Cairo University President Dr. Mohamed Othman Elkhosht announced that the university won, for the second time in a row, first place in the competition for the best environmentally friendly university, which was organized by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and the Supreme Council of Universities under the auspices of Dr. Mohamed Ayman Ashour, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research.

Dr. Mohamed El-Khasht said that Cairo University’s strategy in transforming it into fourth-generation universities focuses on the environmental system, encouraging scientific research in the field of sustainability and preserving the environment, and reducing the effects of climate change in order to consolidate the university’s role in many development axes, and the integration of the university’s educational and research plan with Egypt`s Strategic Vision 2030 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, stressing Cairo University`s leadership in the field of sustainability and becoming an environmentally friendly university.

The President of Cairo University explained that the university contributed to reducing its negative environmental impacts, providing a comprehensive view of the culture of sustainability on campus, and the university`s commitment to the environmental, social and economic aspects of sustainability, pointing out that the university had previously launched a competition for the best environmentally friendly college and institute with the aim of measuring the extent of its commitment. Cairo University faculties and institutes meet the necessary standards, the most important of which is the development of environmentally friendly infrastructure, the extent to which the standards of energy and water rationalization, climate change, waste and transport management, crisis and disaster management, and preparedness for epidemics are taken into consideration, with the approval of large financial prizes for the winners.

Dr. Mohamed El-Khosht indicated that Cairo University has advanced in the international classification of environmentally friendly green universities "UI Green Metric" in the field of sustainable development for the year 2022-2023, and reached the first place among Egyptian public universities, the second place in Africa, and the 270th place globally among 1050 universities worldwide. world level.

For his part, Dr. Mohamed Sami Abdel Sadiq, Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development, said that the University Sustainability Office was able to collect all environmental data, information and activities at Cairo University to benefit from them in international classifications and local and international competitions, pointing out that the selection committee for the best environmentally friendly university The committee, which included experts from the Ministry of Environment, praised the file submitted by Cairo University, which was characterized by fulfilling all the required standards in accordance with international trends. The committee also praised the efforts made at all levels to keep pace with the global movement towards a clean and sustainable university environment.

The Vice President of Cairo University mentioned that in 2021 the Sustainability Office, the first of its kind in Egyptian universities, was inaugurated with the aim of instilling a culture of sustainability in the university, and taking steps towards a more sustainable life, learning and work environment for the university community, in addition to strengthening institutional sustainability and working to prepare cadres capable of Finding environmentally sound, socially just, and economically viable solutions, to make Cairo University a world-leading institution in promoting environmental sustainability.
