Establishing UNESCO Chair for Science and Technology for Heritage Preservation at Cairo University

    Cairo University continues its rapid steps towards globalization and international partnerships.. Establishing a UNESCO chair for science and technology for heritage preservation at Cairo University.


    Dr.. Elkhosht: The chair was established through an agreement between the university and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to use the latest scientific and technological developments for research, study, preservation and protection of tangible cultural heritage.
    Dr.. Elkhosht: Strengthening institutional capacities through international cooperation to create a local and international multicultural network and support training programs and workshops.
    Dr.. Hossam El-Din Abdel Fattah: The UNESCO University Chair is a joint project between higher education institutions and UNESCO to enhance knowledge, education and research.
    Dr. Hani Helal, principal researcher: Creating the chair is based on the expertise, material and human resources of the Rock Engineering Laboratory, the Center for Archeology and Environmental Engineering, and the Egyptian Center for Non-Destructive Technologies at Cairo University for Heritage Preservation.


    Dr. Mohamed Elkhosht, President of Cairo University, announced that the university has signed an agreement with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), to establish the first UNESCO chair for the preservation of cultural heritage. It aims to preserve cultural heritage and contribute to the development of the local economy by providing job opportunities, as well as It contributes to raising the level of public awareness of the value of cultural heritage among youth and civil society. It comes within the framework of the great and ongoing cooperation between Cairo University and UNESCO in various fields of education, science and culture.


    Dr. Elkhosht explained that the UNESCO Chair for Science and Technology for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage aims to preventive conservation, monitoring, and preservation of the tangible cultural heritage through the use of the latest developments in science and technology in research, study, preservation, protection of the tangible cultural heritage, and strengthening institutional capabilities through cooperative work. International to create a local and international multicultural network of partners, exchange knowledge, support training programmes, workshops and courses and provide technical and advisory services for projects of the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities and companies specialized in restoration and maintenance of antiquities.

    Dr. Hossam El-Din Ahmed Abdel Fattah - Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, added: The UNESCO University Chair is considered a joint project between higher education institutions and UNESCO, in order to enhance knowledge, education and research in one of the fields that represents a common research priority, noting that the UNESCO Chair serves the pillars of higher education. Scientific research, tourism, antiquities and sustainable development in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and Egypt’s Sustainable Development Vision 2030.


    For his part, Dr. Hani Helal, Professor of the UNESCO Chair and Principal Researcher, said that the UNESCO Chair for Cultural Heritage Preservation is based on the expertise and material and human resources available at the Rock Engineering Laboratory, the Egyptian Center for Non-Destructive Techniques for Heritage Preservation, and the Center for Archeology and Environmental Engineering at the college, noting that more than 120 local and international projects over 40 years with the aim of preserving cultural heritage in cooperation with the Supreme Council of Antiquities.

    It is worth noting that Cairo University, headed by Dr. Mohamed Elkhosht, has expanded in recent years its cooperation with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in multiple fields and activities. UNESCO carries out its activities across the world through five main programs: education, natural sciences, social and human sciences, culture, communication and information. It supports research in comparative education, provides experts, and sponsors partnerships to strengthen national educational leadership to increase its ability to provide quality education for all. There are 917 UNESCO chairs in more than 850 institutions and universities in 114 countries, and Egypt acquired 4 of them in the past years in various specializations. The new UNESCO chair is headed by Dr. Hani Hilal, a professor at the College of Engineering and former Minister of Higher Education, and he is assisted by Dr. Mohamed Mohi Al-Qarmouty, Director of the Rock Engineering Laboratory at the College.
