Egypt without debtors’ at a symposium of the Women’s Research Center in the Faculty of Mass Communication

    ‘Egypt without debtors’ at a symposium of the Women’s Research Center in the Faculty of Mass Communication with the participation of representatives of the Ministry of Solidarity and the National Committee for the Welfare of Debtors.


    Dr. Hanan Guneid: The Women`s Research Center symposium comes in line with the efforts of the state. Eliminating the phenomenon requires the media to uncover the causes and solve the problem.


    Dr. Soraya Ahmed Al-Badawy: The symposium comes as a contribution and support for the efforts of the political leadership in discussing ways to eliminate it debtor’s crisis.


    Dr. Mahmoud Youssef: The media needs to review the image of "debtors" in the media, and the phenomenon requires keeping pace with the development efforts led by the state.


    Dr. Salah Hashem: The state supports defaulters by all means. We seek to carefully study the debtors’ cases


    Mrs. Nawal Mustafa: The media portrayals of debtors is not correct, and the solution is to strengthen communication.


    Dr. Randa Rizk, member of the Presidential Committee for Community Development: Resolving the issue of debtors ends rape crimes and stops destroying the Egyptian family.


    The Center for Women`s Research and Studies at the Faculty of Mass Communication, Cairo University, organized this afternoon a symposium entitled: (Egypt without Debtors: A Reassured Family), under the auspices of Dr. Mohamed Othman Elkhosht, President of Cairo University, and Dr. Mohamed Sami Abdel Sadiq, Vice President of the University for Community Service Affairs, and Dr. Hanan Junaid, Acting Dean of the College of Mass Communication. The symposium was also held under the supervision of Dr. Thoraya Ahmed Al-Badawi, Acting Director of the Center for Women and Media Research and Studies. The symposiums included many participants including, Dr. Salah Hashem, Professor of Planning and Advisor to the Minister of Social Solidarity, Mrs. Nawal Mustafa, President of the Association for the Care of the Children of Female Prisoners and a member of the National Committee for the Welfare of Debtors, Dr. Randa Rizk, professor of educational media and member of the Presidential Committee for Community Development, in addition to Dr. Mahmoud Youssef, Professor of Public Relations and Former Vice Dean of the Faculty of Mass Communication, Cairo University.

    At the beginning of the symposium, Dr. Hanan Guneid, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Mass Communication, Cairo University, delivered a speech via the Zoom, in which she expressed her happiness with the efforts of the Women’s Research and Studies Center to draw attention to the causes of the debtors’ crisis. She explained that ending the crisis is not achieved with paying the defaulted debts only. She noted that the media is responsible for raising awareness and supporting the efforts of the initiative launched by President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi.

    Dr. Thoraya Ahmed Al-Badawi, Acting Director of the Center for Women’s Research and Studies, welcomed all speakers and guests of the event. She referred to the efforts led by President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, who sought to launch a national initiative to eliminate the issue of debtors, noting that such initiative ensures the stability of the Egyptian state in accordance with Egypt’s future 2030 vision.


    Subsequently, a video produced by the Women’s Research and Studies Unit was shown to introduce the issue of the symposium.  The video provided an explanation of the efforts of the official initiative and a review of the initiative’s most prominent achievements in solving the crisis of defaulters. The video was followed by a presentation of the results of a study carried out by students of the Public Relations Department at the Faculty of Mass Communication, Cairo University under the supervision of Mrs. Shaima Nabil.

    After that, the attendees were given the chance to participate and comment on speakers’ input. Dr. Tariq Fathallah asked about the role of the media and in limiting debtors’ crisis. He also asked about how the debtors’ cases are studied through the National Committee for the Welfare of Debtors. Mrs. Nawal Mustafa clarified that the cases are carefully studied to ensure the that supported debtors are real victims with no precedence for such situation. 


    Dr. Mona Al-Hadidi, Professor of Radio and Television at the Faculty of Mass Communication, Cairo University, and a member of the Supreme Council for Media, also commented. She addressed universities to call for organizing and participating in a campaign (No to Violence against Women) during the coming period. She explained that the phenomenon of violence is not remote from the phenomenon of debtors, who may be exposed to violence, abuse, and the use of force.

    At the end of the symposium, Dr. Thoraya El-Badawy awarded speakers and guests.
