Mass Communication Students Use Podcasting to Explore Important Issues

    Cairo University Podcast Showcase Forum Awards Three Winners


    Under the auspices of Prof. Mohamed Osman El-Khosht, President of Cairo University, and Prof. Salwa El-Awadly, Dean of the Faculty of Mass Communication, the Department of Radio and Television at the Faculty of Mass Communication, Cairo University, launched for the first time a podcast showcase forum as part of the graduation projects of the fourth year students of the radio department for the academic year 2023/2024, under the supervision of Prof. Ashraf Galal, Head of the Department of Radio and Television, and under the supervision of Dr. Nashwa Jamal, Assistant General Supervisor of Training in the Department, and Dr. Nahal Omar El-Farouk, Supervisor of Radio Graduation Projects.


    The platform included a number of academics and international practitioners in the field of podcasting, where the jury was represented by a selection of professors of media and podcasting experts, including Prof. Jehan Yousry, the former Dean of the Faculty of Mass Communication, Cairo University, and Professor of the Department of Radio and Television, Prof. Saber Asran, Professor of the Department of Radio and Television, Prof. Wael Nasr, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Mass Communication, Cairo University, for Graduate Studies and Research, Ms. Rasha El-Deeb, the international media and trainer, responsible for communication for the North Africa and West Asia region of the Voices program, and Ms. Noha Lamlo, the international media and trainer of the International Federation of Journalists.

    The forum included the presentation of 8 podcast projects under the supervision of Ms. Fatima Ahmed, Ms. Shaimaa Ahmed, and Ms. Amira Ismail, assistant professors in the department, in addition to professional supervision experience. Mr. Ahmed El-Hadidi, the presenter of the General Program, and Mr. Mohamed Sadaka, the sound engineer.


    The topics of the presented podcasts varied between political topics, which came at the forefront: monitoring the dimensions of the Palestinian issue and the Arab-Israeli conflict.. and the issues of refugees in Egypt and the status of Sinai, the land of turquoise. As for social issues, they varied between issues of generational differences, and analyzing the criminal mentality, and imagination and the world of social media had their mark on podcast topics, as there is a podcast that deals with the mechanisms of manufacturing daily trends.


    The forum was met with appreciation from Prof. Salwa El-Awadly, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Mass Communication, Cairo University, where she praised the creative level of the students and their ability to discuss many serious and current topics that reflect a great deal of awareness, culture, and the keenness to participate effectively in a way that serves the community.


    It is worth noting that three awards were allocated at the forum in the name of the radio professors of the Department of Radio and Television for the best 3 podcasts, namely the Excellence Award in the name of Prof. Jehan Yousry, the Excellence Award in the name of Prof. Saber Asran, and the Creativity Award in the name of Prof. Adel Fahmy.


    In addition to the winning of some projects with external training grants at major radio production institutions.. in a framework to encourage students and seek to develop their skills.
