In a remarkable display of creativity and passion, a group of fifteen students from Cairo University`s mass communication department has launched a campaign to raise public awareness about the serious issue of electronic waste. Under the banner of their unique initiative called "Techia," these students are determined to shed light on the far-reaching consequences of e-waste, with a particular focus on Health, nature, nutrition and tourism.
E-waste poses a grave threat to the delicate balance of our environment. Incorrect disposal of electronic devices releases toxic substances and heavy metals, which contaminate soil, water sources, and endanger plant and animal life. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the students aim to emphasize the need for responsible e-waste management and recycling practices to safeguard our natural resources.
According to the statistics reveal that Egypt produces an estimated 90,000 tons of electronic waste annually, and this alarming figure continues to escalate each year. Despite the government`s efforts to address this issue, the detrimental effects of e-waste persist, which makes it the fastest-growing waste stream in the world. The students are determined to raise awareness about this escalating problem and inspire action toward sustainable solutions.
Moreover, the campaign highlights the impact of e-waste on public health , underscoring the importance of responsible electronic device management. By shedding light on the potential health risks associated with improper disposal and recycling practices, the students hope to empower individuals to make informed choices and protect both their own well-being and the environment.
This campaign is supervised by Dr. Eman Taha, a lecturer in the Public Relations and Advertising Department, and Ms. Asmaa Abdel-Raouf. They are joined by a group of
participating students, including Youstina Antar, Hania Amr, Aya Magdy, Nira Atef, Nardine Sameh, Mai Walid, Gamal El-Din Safwat, Farah Atef, Nada Walid, Ganna Ahmed, Mariam Tamer, Malak Mohamed, Alia Bilal, Sama Ashraf and Nouran Gawad
