Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has issued a decree appointing Gohar Nabil as the Minister of Youth and Sports, succeeding Dr. Ashraf Sobhy in Dr. Mostafa Madbouly’s second cabinet. But who is Gohar Nabil?
Gohar Nabil is a retired Egyptian handball legend who represented the national team in three Olympic Games: Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996, and Sydney 2000. His career began in Al Ahly SC`s youth sectors. After a brief stint with Zamalek SC, he returned to Al Ahly, where he rose through the ranks and secured numerous championships.
At the international level, Nabil captained the Egyptian national handball team and won the Youth World Championship. Born on January 31, 1973, he played as a "pivot" and is widely regarded as one of the best to ever play that position in the history of Egyptian handball. He was a key figure in Egypt’s 1993 Youth World Cup victory, earning the First-Class Medal of Sports following that historic achievement.
He was also part of the national squad that secured a historic fourth-place finish at the 2001 World Championship in France. Nabil was a pillar of the "Golden Generation," alongside stars like Hamada El-Roubi, Hamada El-Naqib, Hussein Zaki, Ashraf Awad, and Sherif Moamen.
Throughout his career, Nabil earned prestigious accolades, most notably being named the Best Pivot in Africa and the Best Pivot in the World in 1998 and 2000. Domestically, he won 11 League titles with Al Ahly, 3 Egypt Cups, 6 Arab Championships, and 3 African titles. He served as the Head of Al Ahly’s Handball Department for the 2006–2007 season. Furthermore, he was named Egypt’s Best Player for two consecutive seasons (1995–1997), Africa’s Best Player (1998–1999), and was selected for the World All-Star team in 1999–2000.
Educationally, Nabil holds a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education (1995) and a Diploma in Business Administration from the American University in Cairo (1997). He also worked in the advertising sector at Al-Ahram Foundation from 1998 to 2013.
His administrative career is equally distinguished. He served as a board member of the Egyptian Handball Federation (2008–2011) and was a member of the Arab Handball Federation’s Competitions Committee during the same period. In 2017, he was elected as a board member of Al Ahly SC.
In the media, Nabil hosted several sports programs, including Under the Spotlight on DMC, Egypt Mondial on OnTime Sports, and Extra Time on Al Ahly TV.
