Motorsports are relatively modern in Egypt, yet they have witnessed significant growth in recent years, both in terms of the number of participants and the diversity of events and international engagement. This study aims to shed light on the origins of motorsports in Egypt, the most prominent challenges faced, key achievements and practices, and future proposals for its development.
The Origins and Evolution Although motorsports were not traditionally part of the Egyptian sporting landscape, there are clear indicators of their early beginnings. For instance, according to Bosla (an organizer of motorsport events in Egypt), the company was established in 2011 to elevate the sport`s standards in Egypt, though activities in desert rallies date back to 2004. Furthermore, initiatives such as university teams designing electric vehicles to participate in local competitions demonstrate a technical and developmental dimension to the sport. On the other hand, notable recent events have been organized, such as the 2025 edition of the EasyKart Trophy Egypt, held in Al-Alamein under state patronage. This championship featured international participation and was sanctioned by international racing bodies. Thus, it can be said that motorsports in Egypt have transitioned from individual or experimental activities to a more organized framework involving institutions and professional organizations.
.
Diverse Disciplines and Competitions Motorsport competitions in Egypt vary between Karting, Desert Rallies, Drifting, and Speed Races. For example, the EasyKart Trophy Egypt 2025 included various categories ranging from Beginners to Seniors, all held within international standards. In the field of Drifting, women’s participation has emerged as a transformative example. Reports have highlighted driver Wafaa Al-Farmawy, who entered this field striving to become Egypt`s first professional female drift driver. As for rallies, Egypt has a history of hosting major events like the Rallye des Pharaons, which ran from 1982 to 2015. It was one of the world’s renowned cross-country rallies, bringing together cars and motorcycles to navigate challenging terrains.
This diversity is one of the strengths to build upon, as it allows for the integration of different talents and involves various social segments.
Key Achievements and Global Recognition Among the achievements, it is worth noting that Egypt has begun to secure a position in motorsports at regional and international levels, whether by hosting events or through the participation of Egyptian teams. Notable examples include university team victories and international participation in Karting and Drifting.
Egypt is increasingly attracting international or internationally-sanctioned competitions. Furthermore, several Egyptian drivers have gained international acclaim, such as Ramy Serry, Hisham Al-Khatib, and Karim Hani in Drifting, as well as Ibrahim Badawy in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) category.
There is also a strong focus on technology and innovation. The university teams building electric cars for competition signify a shift toward a "future sport" that embraces electric vehicles and modern technology.
Future Proposals for Development To sustain and solidify this growth, several recommendations should be followed:
Expanding Infrastructure: Building or equipping internationally certified tracks and establishing Karting circuits across various governorates to broaden the grassroots fan base.
Enhancing Legislation and Institutional Support: Providing financial or regulatory incentives for teams and events, and streamlining licensing procedures for international participation.
Supporting Early Talent: Implementing training programs for youth (both male and female) and supporting universities that establish automotive racing teams.
Encouraging Media Coverage and Private Sector Partnerships: To highlight the sport, attract sponsors, and boost sports tourism. Events like Drag Races in Sharm El-Sheikh have already showcased Egypt’s potential for hosting high-level sporting spectacles.
Motorsports in Egypt have taken significant steps toward expansion and diversification, proving a capability to compete both locally and internationally. However, a long road remains to make this sector more organized, inclusive, and sustainable. By investing in opportunities and overcoming obstacles, Egypt can become a regional hub for motorsports, attracting talent, audiences, and investment alike. In light of this, focusing on infrastructure, talent, and institutional organization is not a luxury but a necessity to ensure that Egyptian motorsports remain at the forefront, serving both sporting and economic leadership.
